REFLECTING THE LIGHT OF JESUS
“. . . Let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father in heaven.” (Mat. 5:16) MSG
Jesus is the light of the world. You and I, as His followers, are to imitate him in being lights in our world today. In other words, we are called to reflect His light in this world of darkness. Light has many purposes, but most of all it is to brighten the path and clarify the understanding of who Jesus Christ is to the world around us. However, there are some conditions that affect the function of light as we sincerely pursue Christlikeness.
LIGHT functions brightly and best when the lamp is clean. (Luke 11:34) So, when we eliminate attitudes that are not glorifying to God, and the habits that contaminate our lifestyle and example, our light will shine at its best.
LIGHT when functioning with great intensity, reveals even that which is obscure. (John 3:20) The Holy Spirit of God often addresses little known truths to convict us of our misdeeds and wrongdoings. He does this to create guilt and discomfort to lead us to repentance, seeking the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
LIGHT serves as a measure of safety in difficult or dangerous surroundings. (Ephesians 5:11-14) As runners would confirm, reflectors are a safety measure in the dark. Living in a sinful world, when one comes to the realization of the need for a Savior, the death of the Son of God on the cruel cross of Calvary becomes meaningful. He died to reconcile sinful mankind with a just and merciful Creator. This serves as a warning light in a danger zone. In addition, receiving forgiveness and eternal life will be a safety bonus.
LIGHT is most effective when visible. (Matthew 5:15) Have you noticed how insects seem drawn to a lighted porch light? As followers of Christ, when we live up to the expectation of our Master Jesus Christ, we can be an open book for those we hope to reach with the love of Christ. Then our lifestyle will serve as a magnet to draw others to Him. May we be bold in reflecting the light of Jesus wherever we go and bring glory to our Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
