In Tuscumbia, Alabama, a little girl was born into a prominent family in 1880. As an infant, an illness left her deaf, blind, and mute. As the years went by, she wandered about aimlessly, frequently leaving a trail of disaster in her wake. Because of her inability to communicate, her family refrained from any form of discipline.

Then a young teacher named Anne Sullivan was hired to teach the little girl. This ushered in a life changing experience for the youngster: she learned to communicate verbally and mastered the art of reading with her hands. Without Anne’s help, Helen Keller would have faced life alone, surrounded by silence and darkness. Instead, today, her perseverance and courage has touched millions around the world to inspire them to forge ahead despite challenging circumstances.

We have all faced times in our lives, I am sure, when we struggled to communicate with family or friends. At times of trials or decision-making in our lives, we may have also felt unable to reach the Throne Room of God, because we didn’t know what to pray or how to pray. Today, however, we can pray with confidence because the Word of God assures us that the Holy Spirit is interceding on our behalf. (Romans 8:22-27)

What a comfort to realize that we are not left to our own devices to wander through life aimlessly! God has provided a way for us to commune with Him. We have the privilege to communicate with Almighty God through His Holy Spirit. (Romans 8:26)

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26)

So let us diligently seek this day to invoke the power of His Holy Spirit to take possession of us in heart and mind (will and spirit) so we may receive the help we need to reach the potential He has for each of us through prayer.
